what are symptoms of POF?

EarthyGal - October 30th, 2010 3:16 AM

* Irregular or skipped periods (amenorrhea)
* Hot flashes or night sweats
* Vaginal dryness
* Irritability or difficulty concentrating
* Decreased sexual desire

According to the Mayo Clinic these are the symptoms of POF.

I think you also need to take into consideration the age of the woman. the symptoms are also somewhat related to menopause which is a natural process for women.

I think they call it premature ovarian failure because we dont exactly expect the ovaries to fail during early or late 30's.

Yes. Typically women with POF are in their 30's. It is quite normal to experience declining ovarian function as you get older.

You are right. It does look like signs of menopause!

If you are young and experiencing this kinds of symptoms then you could have POF.

these are some of the causes of POF:

Genetic disorders
Autoimmune diseases
Tuberculosis of the genital tract
Smoking
Radiation and/or chemotherapy
Ovarian failure following hysterectomy
Prolonged gnrh therapy
Enzyme defects
Resistant ovary
