Hello, what's the difference between primary and secondary infertility?

*URIE* - May 25th, 2010 2:20 AM

"Primary infertility describes couples who have never been able to become pregnant after at least 1 year of unprotected sex (intercourse).

Secondary infertility describes couples who have been pregnant at least once, but have not been able to become pregnant again." - MedlinePlus

Primary infertility is the term used to describe a woman who has never had a successful birth of a child while secondary infertility is the inability to conceive after having already had a successful birth.

Primary infertility refers to couples who have not been given a chance to get pregnant after 1 year of unprotected intercourse.

Secondary infertility refers to couples who have been pregnant at least once in a past but hasn't been given a chance to have a baby again.

What I understand about primary infertility is it is a term used for a couple who have never had a chance to have a baby. For secondary infertility, it refers to those couples who have already a baby once but never had a chance to have another baby for the second time.

i think secondary infertility has a lot to do with age of the mom. there are cases wherein, the parents would opt to have a second child later in the relationship and find that they are unable to do so.

i see, so me and my husband are encountering secondary infertility. we have a 6 year old boy now and we are planning to give him a baby sis or bro but we are having a hard time conceiving. we are in denial of the infertility issue because we had a baby already.
