This type of male fertility test can help assess sperm health, including sperm count, which can sometimes be a contributing factor to problems getting pregnant. But what exactly is a semen analysis test and what types of male fertility problems can it help to assess?
What is A Semen Analysis Test?
A semen analysis test evaluates sperm count; it is performed by obtaining a semen sample.
The sample can be obtained either by ejaculation into a sterile container or can otherwise be obtained through intercourse using a special condom provided by your doctor or fertility specialist.
In order to achieve accurate results, the sample must be evaluated within two hours of collection. The earlier the sample is evaluated, the more accurate the semen analysis results.
Preparing for A Semen Analysis Test
In order to prepare for this male fertility test, you must not engage in sexual activity that causes ejaculation for 2 to 3 days prior to the test.

Semen Analysis Test Results
A semen analysis test evaluates the volume, number and structure of sperm, as well as sperm movement (motility).
In addition, this male fertility test evaluates semen fluid with regard to thickness, as well as levels of acidity and sugar content.
A normal range with regard to sperm volume is between 1.5 to 5.0 milliliters per ejaculation while sperm count should range between 20 to 150 million sperm per milliliter. A minimum of 60% of sperm should have normal shape and healthy motility.

A semen analysis test can help detect if there is a fertility problem with regard to sperm production or sperm quality as well as whether these factors are contributing to infertility.
In addition, this male fertility test can determine whether a high white blood cell count (usually the indicator of infection) is resulting in problems getting pregnant, as well as abnormal acidity levels.
A semen test can also be used to diagnose Klinefelter’s Syndrome.
