Will taking the pill while pregnant harm the baby?

Hearty - February 14th, 2011 7:29 AM

If you find out that you became pregnant while using the pill, it may be helpful to know that there is no conclusive evidence indicating that the pill will harm your baby in any way. Fetuses exposed to the pill during early pregnancy are not at increased risk for developing complications or birth defects.

Using the birth control pill while pregnant is not recommended, so if you think you could be pregnant, it may be a wise idea to stop taking the pills

whilst it's recommended not to take the pill whilst pregnant, obviously if you have fallen pregnant whilst on the pill and were unaware for a while, the general advice is it shouldn't cause any problems as the pill does not affect the process of pregnancy - it affects the release of eggs and the thickness of the cervical mucus, which will not affect the feotus if it has already managed to attach. Obviously it's recommended to come of the pill asap but most medical practitioners feel that if you have unwittingly taken it whilst pregnant, it is unlikely to have done any damage in the meantime.

If you accidentally took some birth control and then found out you are pregnant, the baby should be fine. However, see your doctor to make sure you are taking the right steps.

Studies have shown that taking birth control pills while pregnant results in an increased risk of birth defects.

The writing on the package states "Discontinue use if you become pregnant." If you know that you're pregnant stop taking the pills. (They wouldn't do you much good anyway!)

I think what this question is asking is if you're pregnant but don't know it yet and you're still taking the pill, if it's dangerous to the fetus. Well, I'm in that exact situation right now, and my doctor and obstetrician both said not to worry about it.

There is no proof that the birth control pill will harm your baby. If you are sure you are pregnant, stop taking the pill and see your doctor. Don't be overly alarmed if this happens. It's happened to others like yourself and the babies turn out perfectly healthy.

From what I have read it CAN. Look on any warning labels or the fact sheet sometimes given with the prescription. You should get to your doctor immediately for a test.

You REALLY shouldn't be taking birth control if you're pregnant. There are some complications or defects of the baby might bring.

as i remembered, Birth control/pills can cause miscarriages... however, for you to be sure consult your obgyne on this matter :D

just to make sure, k...

sayp - February 14th, 2011 1:54 PM

why not consult a doctor on this matter to prevent you from stress of too much thinking and worries, this can also affect your baby :D

why should i let my wife take pill if she is pregnant? Just want to have no wonders, doubts and questions "stress free", but jsut to focus on her successful pregnancy and baby's condition inside the womb. No let for her to take a pill , she's pregnant right?

sweetie - February 17th, 2011 10:05 AM

It will most likely be fine but she should talk to her OB.

Lora84 - February 17th, 2011 10:21 AM

have her ask her Doctor obgyne ...
But I am pretty sure she is pretty safe, especially if it is a girl.

If you get pregnant while taking birth control pills as directed, it will have no negative effect on the baby. I was taking birth control pills for 11 years when I unexpectedly and unknowingly conceived. I had no symptoms and continued to have a period (because of the hormones in the Pill) and I didn't find out I was pregnant until I went to my doctor for my regularly scheduled yearly physical. Due to having periods, I had to have an ultrasound to determine gestation, which I was shocked to find I was 17 weeks along. I had always scoffed at the idea that a woman could be pregnant and not know it. I was deservedly humbled when I realized I had been pregnant 3 times before and I had no idea I was 17 weeks along let alone even pregnant. Of course, the day I found out I was pregnant I stopped taking the Pill, but I had taken it every day of the pregnancy up until that day. I was very worried about what was going to happen to my baby because of this, but my doctor assured me that there are no links between taking birth control pills as directed and any type of birth defect or abnormality. When unknowingly pregnant, taking birth control pills on a regular basis has very little risk of causing harm to the baby, but it is advised to stop taking them when you find out you are pregnant or if you suspect you are.
