A molar pregnancy, is the abnormality of the placenta which is caused by a problem when the egg and sperm join together at fertilization. |
Molar pregnancies rarely involve a developing embryo, and the growth of this material is rapid compared to normal fetal growth. It has the appearance of a large and random collection of grape-like cell clusters. |

Tissue that should have become a fetus does not form into one. Instead it becomes a tissue growth, that is called a mole, in the uterus, hence the term molar pregnancy. The symptoms will resemble pregnancy although there is no fetus present. Molar pregnancy must be treated right away because it can be fatal. |
