what is a molar pregnancy?

Rose - April 19th, 2011 2:43 PM

A molar pregnancy, is the abnormality of the placenta which is caused by a problem when the egg and sperm join together at fertilization.

Molar pregnancies rarely involve a developing embryo, and the growth of this material is rapid compared to normal fetal growth. It has the appearance of a large and random collection of grape-like cell clusters.

Tissue that should have become a fetus does not form into one. Instead it becomes a tissue growth, that is called a mole, in the uterus, hence the term molar pregnancy. The symptoms will resemble pregnancy although there is no fetus present. Molar pregnancy must be treated right away because it can be fatal.

There are 2 types of molar pregnancy: complete & partial.
